Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, but reared in Texas, John's musical career began with trumpet lessons at age eight.
He switched from trumpet to guitar in his teens because, on a guitar, "the high notes don't hurt your lips the way they do an a trumpet." He played in a number of garage bands in Austin (fortunately, none of this music was ever recorded), before forming The Boogiemen, a jazz-rock band that played for conventions and in various "smoky little rooms" in and around New Orleans.
John is a licensed clinical social worker who has worked in the mental health field for his entire career. He received his Ph.D. from Tulane University at the ripe old age of sixty. John has recently taken up writing as a hobby, and currently serves as President of the Writers' Guild of Texas.
